Small Group Ministry

Small Group Ministry Starts October 2009

We are excited to kickoff our new Small Group Ministry (SGM) program this autumn here at the UU Church of the Brazos Valley.  "Small Group Ministry is intentional lay-led small groups that deepen and expand the ministry of a congregation. SGM helps build community and provides opportunities for deeper relationships - intimacy -- and opportunity for deeper spiritual exploration and search for meaning - ultimacy."  (This is according to the UU Small Group Ministry Network, which promotes these programs in our churches.)

Here in the Brazos Valley, our groups will meet once monthly, usually in members' homes.  Members will covenant with one another how they choose, intentionally, to be together; they will have opportunities for deep sharing in extended check-in sessions; and they will explore together the ultimate meaning to be found through mutual, spiritual reflection on our values and beliefs.

If you have been attending our church for several years, you no doubt will recall the Covenant Groups that were active for a couple of years earlier this decade.  Clearly, these new SGM groups will be similar to our old Covenant Groups-but they also will have some important differences.  For example, the now defunct Covenant Groups each focused on a different interest, or affinity.  Today, we also have some great interest groups separate from our SGM groups: book club, the "Chick Flicks" gatherings, or the drumming group that's re-starting this month.

But, these new SGM groups will all share a similar focus on spiritual values and theological viewpoints explored from Unitarian Universalist perspectives.  They will give us opportunities to reflect deeply on our own views, share them with others, and be inspired by the reflections of others.

We'll have facilitator training this month, but sign-up for these new groups will begin the first Sunday in October, with the first group meetings later that month.  We'll start with four groups, meeting at different times during the week, once a month.  We'll invite you to sign up for the time that best fits your schedule.  See next month's newsletter for more details.
