October 23, 2011: CROPWalk
Reverend Dan DeLeon of Friends Congregational Church in College Station is leading the charge this year as coordinator of this successful annual event whose purpose is to stop hunger in our community and around the globe. More information will be forthcoming.
The Social Justice Committee, consistent with Unitarian Universalist Principles and Purposes and our church's mission and vision, provides an avenue of outreach to the needs of the broader community of the Brazos Valley-putting our faith into action.
We meet in the Anthony Building of our church on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m.
Split The Plate
On the second Sunday of each month The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Brazos Valley splits the collection offerings of all non designated funds 50/50 for a pre-determined charitible cause.
2011's Split-the-Plate recipients have been:
January - Planned Parenthood
February - Brazos Valley African-American Museum
March - Brazos Animal Shelter
April - Phoebe's Home
May - Voices for Children
June - Pride Community Center
Change for Change
Every Sunday any loose change placed in the offering plate goes to Social Justice in support of our numerous community outreach programs.
We engage in many programs and activities; however, you do not have to be a member of Social Justice Committee to get involved in our Community Outreach activities.
Listed below are some of the Outreach activities the Social Justice Committee is currently involved with. For more information, please visit our Community Outreach page.
Harmony: Peace Through Music Concert
NWEI - The committee is not currently involved in the Institute's courses, but we promote the Northwest Earth Institute as "a national leader in the development of innovative programs that empower individuals and organizations to transform culture toward a sustainable and enriching future." Please contact email@example.com for more information.
Banned Book Week - Please contact the Social Justice Committee with ideas for how the UUCBV can get involved in Fall, 2011's Banned Book Week, September 24 - October 1. Observed since 1982, this annual American Library Association event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.
We are not in the business of making a profit, but we do engage in activities to raise money for Social Justice issues in our community by selling products like Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, and tea as well as other consummable and activism/decorative items. Make a difference with your treasure as well as your time and talent.
